Inflation to Blame for Young Adults Asking Parents for Cash: Kevin O'LearyMenu iconSearch iconBusiness Insider logoBusiness Insider logoAccount iconAccount iconClose iconChevron iconAccount iconShare iconFacebook IconEmail iconTwitter iconLinkedIn iconLink iconSave Article IconAngle down iconClose icon

Many young Americans are hitting up their parents for cash because they can't afford the basics following historic inflation, Kevin O'Leary said.

A recent Pew survey found that 59% of parents with children aged 18 to 34 said they helped their kids financially. Only 45% of young adults said they were completely financially independent from their parents.

O'Leary was asked about the survey on Fox News this week. "This is all about affordability," the "Shark Tank" investor said.

The O'Leary Ventures chairman, nicknamed "Mr Wonderful," underlined the painful impact of historic inflation in recent years.

"Affordability got much tougher in rent, and protein, and gas, and all kinds of other issues," he said. "But the average wage in America barely budged."

Annualized inflation surged as high as 9.1% in June 2022, and has remained north of 3% in recent months, above the Federal Reserve's target rate of 2%.

However, real or inflation-adjusted wages for the median American worker only increased by 1.7% between 2019 and 2023, government data shows.

Even so, many people have seen slimmer pay increases, and purchase items that have risen in price faster than the headline inflation rate.

"You've got this massive squeeze on a whole cohort of people," O'Leary said. "This cohort is in trouble because they got whacked by some hardcore inflation that has not gone away."

Several experts have sounded the inflation alarm, citing it as one reason why more and more people are falling behind on their credit-card payments, tapping their nest eggs, and putting away less money each month.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski told analysts this week that consumers earning $45,000 or less are feeling "pressured" by high prices, and cut back on the fast-food chain's products last quarter as "eating at home has become more affordable."

The inflation headache has been worsened by the Fed's campaign to relieve it. The central bank has raised interest rates from nearly zero to more than 5% in recent years.

Higher borrowing costs discourage saving, hiring, and investing, which can help ease upward pressure on prices. But they've also raised people's monthly payments on their mortgages, car loans, and credit cards, when they're already facing higher food, fuel, and housing costs.

"This has been a particularly tough jolt" for young Americans over the last three years, O'Leary said.

Blackstone surpasses $1 billion mark for evergreen private equity fund aimed at wealthy individuals - MarketWatchMarketWatch Site Logo

Blackstone Inc. has raised $1.29 billion for its evergreen private equity fund for people with at least $5 million in investments as it builds up its third major pool for individual investors.

Blackstone Private Equity Strategies LP, the fund that’s affiliated with Blackstone BX, -1.20%, on Monday disclosed the sales figure after reports surfaced last year that the fund had launched fundraising efforts.

The fund’s portfolio consists of 17 investments and future commitments to acquire investments totaling up to $1.27 billion, as of Friday, the filing said.

“These investments and commitments span various industries, including digital infrastructure, technology, business services, financial services and aerospace and defense, and include direct, secondary, and structured investments, among others,” the filing said.

Blackstone Private Equity Strategies is being marketed through registered investment advisers and other wealth managers as part of a surge in interest from well-heeled individuals in increasing their exposure to alternative investments outside of traditional stocks and bonds.

Blackstone Private Equity Strategies is sometimes described as the “third leg” of the stool in the firm’s efforts to reach beyond its investor base of institutions along with Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT) and Blackstone Private Credit Fund (BCRED).

Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust tipped the scales at $66 billion in assets under management as of Sept. 30 after launching in 2017, while three-year-old BCRED disclosed $61.3 billion in AUM as of the same date.

For its part, Blackstone’s BX, -1.20% firmwide total AUM stood at just over $1 trillion at the end of the third quarter.

Registered funds that take investments from individuals and smaller institutions rose by about $125 billion in 2022 from the previous year to total assets under management (AUM) of $425 billion, according to data from private-equity investor and data provider Hamilton Lane Inc.  HLNE, +2.28%.

Blackstone Private Equity Strategies Fund is open to qualified purchasers, a class of investors that own at least $5 million in investments, as defined under U.S. securities laws.

By contrast, BREIT is open to accredited investors, defined as people with at least $1 million of assets outside the value of their primary residence.

On Dec. 15, Blackstone said it had raised $0 for Blackstone Private Equity Strategies Fund, according to a Form D filing.

Broker dealers listed for Blackstone Private Equity Strategies Fund include H&L Equities LLC, Merrill Lynch, UBS Financial Services Inc., and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

BlackRock upgrades U.S. stocks, says AI-driven rally could broaden this year - MarketWatchMarketWatch Site Logo

BlackRock on Monday upgraded its overall outlook for U.S. stocks to overweight from neutral, as the world’s largest asset manager sees the S&P 500’s upward momentum continuing for the next six to 12 months amid cooling inflation and potential interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

The stock market’s tech-driven rally, fueled by investor excitement over artificial intelligence, should “broaden out as inflation falls further, the Fed starts to cut rates, and the market sticks to its rosy macro outlook,” said a team of strategists led by Jean Boivin, head of the BlackRock Investment Institute, in their weekly commentary research note on Monday.

“Markets are pricing a soft economic landing where inflation falls to 2% without a recession,” the strategists noted. “With markets tending to focus on one theme at a time, this narrative can support the rally over our tactical horizon and allow it to expand beyond tech.”

U.S. stocks entered the new year with the wind of a stellar 2023 at their back, helped by encouraging economic data such as strong GDP growth in the fourth quarter and falling inflation metrics, with the latter possibly giving the Fed a green light to begin cutting interest rates as early as the first half of 2024.

The benchmark S&P 500 index SPX on Thursday closed at a record high for the fifth straight trading day, the longest streak of its kind since November 2021. In the month of January so far, the S&P 500 has advanced 3.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA is up 1.7% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP has surged 4.1%, according to FactSet data.

However, Boivin and his team still “stay nimble” and are “ready to pivot,” as current market conditions could create a wide range of uncertainties, they said. For example, the strategists think the consensus view of a soft landing for the U.S. economy could be challenged later this year, and that inflation is still bound for a resurgence in the long term.

“We agree with markets that inflation will fall near 2% this year, helping the upward momentum extend into the year. Yet inflation is unlikely to stay there in the long run,” Boivin and his team said, citing “too-hot” U.S. wage growth that could make it difficult to keep the core inflation near the Fed’s targeted 2% level.

“That means inflation will likely roller-coaster up toward 3% in 2025,” they wrote.

U.S. stocks finished higher on Monday with the S&P 500 rising to close at another record high as investors braced for a busy week packed with the Fed’s policy decision, earnings from megacap tech companies and a crucial U.S. employment report. The S&P 500 was up 0.8% to end at 4,927.93, while the Dow ended 0.6% higher and the Nasdaq Composite jumped over 1%, according to FactSet data.

Successful renovations blend aesthetic preferences with practical considerations, ensuring the space is both beautiful and functional. Professional services and skilled tradespeople are integral to bringing a homeowner's vision to fruition while adhering to building codes and regulations.

Key Takeaways

  • A well-planned renovation enhances bathroom functionality and increases home value.
  • Selecting quality materials and skilled tradespeople is crucial for a successful outcome.
  • Effective project management ensures renovations are completed on time and within budget.

Planning Your Bathroom Renovation

A spacious bathroom with modern fixtures, a sleek bathtub, and a separate shower. Natural light floods in through a large window, highlighting the clean, minimalist design

Before commencing a bathroom renovation in Point Cook, it's essential to carefully plan your budget, consider the design and layout, and select appropriate materials and fixtures. By prioritising these components, homeowners ensure that the renovation meets their needs and reflects a modern aesthetic.

Establishing a Budget

One's budget is the cornerstone of any renovation. Homeowners should itemise all expected expenses to create a realistic budget that encompasses costs for materials, labour, and any unexpected contingencies. An outline may look as follows:

  • Materials: Tiles, paint, fixtures
  • Labour: Plumbing, electrical work
  • Contingencies: A reserve fund for unforeseen expenses

This financial plan ensures that they can afford the desired renovations without compromising on quality.

Design and Layout Considerations

The layout of a bathroom is pivotal, as it dictates the functionality and flow of space. They must contemplate the placement of the toilet, sink, and bathtub, ensuring they utilise the space efficiently. Incorporating sufficient lighting and storage is equally important to enhance the room's usability and aesthetic appeal. A bathroom's design should reflect the homeowner's personal style while also being practical for their everyday needs.

Selecting Materials and Fixtures

Choosing the right materials and fixtures can profoundly impact the bathroom's appearance and durability. Homeowners should consider:

  • Tiles: For walls and flooring, opt for non-slip and water-resistant options.
  • Fixtures: Select a consistent style for the toilet, sink, and taps that aligns with the modern design.
  • Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting, both natural and artificial.
  • Accessories: Use accessories to add a personal touch and cater to functional requirements.

Homeowners ought to select items that provide both visual appeal and long-term resilience, aligning with their set budget.

The Renovation Process

A bathroom in Point Cook undergoes renovation: tiles being replaced, new fixtures installed, and fresh paint on the walls

The renovation process for a bathroom in Point Cook involves several key stages, starting from conception to the final touches. It requires skilled tradespeople proficient in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, tiling and waterproofing.

Initial Consultation

During the initial meeting, homeowners discuss their needs and desires with a renovation specialist. This step outlines the project scope, design preferences, and budget considerations. Clients are provided with a detailed plan and timeline for their bathroom renovation.

Demolition and Removal

Trained professionals begin by safely demolishing and removing existing features. This may include the removal of tiles, fixtures, and sometimes even walls, making way for the new design. Strict adherence to safety and waste disposal regulations ensures this process is carried out efficiently.

Structural and Carpentry Work

Carpenters perform essential work on the structure, such as building new walls or modifying existing ones. This stage lays the foundation for the bathroom's overall layout, requiring precise craftsmanship to ensure structural integrity and alignment with the design.

Plumbing and Electrical Work

Licensed plumbers and electricians install new pipes and wiring systems to support modern fixtures and amenities. This phase focuses on functional layout and compliance with Australian standards for safety and efficiency of water and power consumption.

Tiling and Waterproofing

Tilers meticulously lay tiles, aligning them for visual appeal and functionality. Waterproofing specialists apply membranes and sealants to prevent water damage, a critical step in safeguarding the longevity of the bathroom.

Finishing Touches and Cleanup

Finally, installers add the finishing touches like trim, paint, and accessories. Once the fixtures are in place and the bathroom is operational, a thorough cleanup is performed, leaving the space spotless and ready for use.

Through this methodical process, homeowners in Point Cook can achieve a beautifully renovated bathroom that combines functionality with aesthetics.

Professional Services and Tradespeople

When undertaking bathroom renovations in Point Cook, selecting the right professionals is crucial. The process involves experienced renovators, builders, tradies, and specialists like plumbers, electricians, and tilers. Understanding Builders and Tradies

Builders and tradies play pivotal roles in renovation projects. They should be evaluated based on:

A list of specific tradespeople you might require includes:

  • Plumbers: Essential for all piping and water-related fixtures.

Professionals must provide evidence of both insurance and a guarantee of their work.

  • Continuous Improvement: Using feedback to refine processes and enhance the client experience in future projects.

Cost and Value

In bathroom renovations in Point Cook, the cost of the project is intricately linked to the value it adds to one's home. It is essential for homeowners to approach this investment with a detailed budget and a clear understanding of the expected scope of work.

Getting Comprehensive Quotes

One should obtain multiple quotes from contractors to accurately determine the financial investment required for a bathroom renovation. It is important that these quotes:

  • Include a full breakdown of labour and material costs.
  • Provide clarity on potential additional expenses that could arise during the project.

Evaluating Project Scope and Costs

Understanding the scope of work is critical in managing the budget for a bathroom renovation. Homeowners should consider:

  • The extent of the renovation—whether it's a simple update or a complete overhaul.
  • Itemised costs of all aspects, including plumbing, tiling, and fittings, ensuring they align with the desired end result.

Maximising Return on Investment

Investing wisely in a bathroom renovation can lead to a notable increase in property value. To maximise this potential return, homeowners should focus on:

  • Up-to-date designs and features that appeal to the broader market.
  • The quality of materials and workmanship, which can prolong the lifespan of the renovation and appeal to future buyers.

In the contemporary Point Cook bathroom, one finds a preference for clean lines and minimalistic design choices. They often include features such as wall-mounted vanities and frameless glass shower screens, which serve to both save space and add an airy, open feeling to the room. Freestanding bathtubs are another popular addition, providing a focal point that embodies modern luxury.

  • Materials: Homeowners are opting for durable and stylish materials like stone, polished concrete, and timber.
  • Sustainability: Water-saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets and showerheads are increasingly common.

Innovative Design Solutions

Designers in Point Cook are constantly finding innovative solutions to make bathrooms more comfortable and user-friendly. Features such as heated flooring, smart mirrors, and high-tech toilets with bidets and seat warmers add a level of sophistication and convenience to the bathroom experience.

  • Lighting: LED lights and skylights are installed to enhance natural lighting, while also offering adjustable settings to create the perfect ambiance.
  • Storage: Custom-built cabinets and recessed shelving are tactically placed to maximise storage without compromising the overall design aesthetic.

By incorporating these modern features and innovative design solutions, Point Cook residents can enjoy a bathroom that is not only functional and comfortable but also a testament to modern design excellence.

Finishing Elements

In any bathroom renovation in Point Cook, the selection of the right finishing elements such as accessories and lighting is vital to achieving both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Choosing the Right Accessories

One must carefully select accessories that not only complement the bathroom's style but also offer practicality. Towel rails, soap dishes, and storage solutions like shelving or vanity units are pivotal not just for convenience but for maintaining a clutter-free space. Hooks for robes or towels should be strategically placed for easy access, and mirrors serve both a functional and decorative purpose. It's recommended to choose durable materials like stainless steel or brushed nickel that can withstand the humid bathroom environment.

  • Towel Rails: Stainless steel, fixed or heated
  • Soap Dishes: Ceramic, mounted or free-standing
  • Storage Solutions: Wall-mounted shelves, mirrored cabinets
  • Hooks: Chrome, positioned by the shower or bath
  • Mirrors: Fog-resistant with LED lighting

Lighting and Ambience

Proper lighting in a bathroom is critical for safety and aesthetics. A blend of task, ambient, and accent lighting creates a versatile and pleasant atmosphere. Task lighting around mirrors is essential for activities like shaving or makeup application, while ambient lighting can be achieved with a central ceiling fixture or wall sconces. For added luxury, dimmable controls allow one to adjust the brightness to suit different moods or times of the day. LED lights are a preferred choice for their energy efficiency and longevity. Robust IP-rated lighting fixtures should be used to ensure safety against water ingress.

  • Task Lighting: Above or alongside the mirror, bright white LED
  • Ambient Lighting: Ceiling fixtures, dimmable options
  • Accent Lighting: LED strip lights under vanities or along alcoves
  • Safety: Use IP44-rated fixtures or higher for wet areas

Post-Renovation

Upon completion of a bathroom renovation in Point Cook, homeowners should turn their attention to the imperative tasks of cleaning, maintenance, and ensuring they have adequate post-project support from the renovation company. This ensures the longevity and aesthetics of the newly renovated space is maintained.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning should commence once all construction debris is removed. Homeowners can facilitate this by:

  • Dusting all surfaces to remove construction dust
  • Mopping the floors with gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
  • Wiping down cabinets, countertops, fixtures, and appliances

For ongoing maintenance, the following practices are recommended:

  • Regularly check and reseal grout lines as needed to prevent water damage and mould growth
  • Promptly repair any wear and tear to avoid long-term damage
  • Utilise exhaust fans and open windows to reduce moisture and prevent the growth of mould

Post-Project Support

Top-tier businesses in the field of bathroom renovations place a significant emphasis on customer satisfaction even after the physical work is done. They typically provide:

  • Guidelines on the care and maintenance of new fixtures and surfaces
  • Warranties for workmanship and materials
  • Contact information for future queries or concerns regarding the renovation

Homeowners are encouraged to thoroughly understand the post-project support provided to ensure any future issues are addressed promptly and efficiently.
