LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The second jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown could be missing 150th Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and other co-stars, quashing hopes for a rematch after the thrilling three-way photo finish in the milestone race.

Trainer Kenny McPeek and the horse's ownership wouldn't commit to whether the colt would race in the 149th Preakness on May 18 in Baltimore, which requires a quick two-week turnaround. Mystik Dan will travel to Saratoga, New York, before they decide whether to enter him in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness.

"We're not committed to the Preakness, not yet," McPeek said Sunday morning outside his barn on Churchill Downs' back side. "I ran him back once in two weeks, and it completely backfired on me. ... So we'll just watch him over the next week. It'll be one of those [situations] where we'll probably take it up to the last minute.

"We'll let him tell us."

Saratoga Race Course, the picturesque track in upstate New York, will host the Triple Crown's final jewel for the next three years while Belmont Park is being reconstructed. The Belmont has also been shortened to 1¼ miles, matching the distance in the Derby that Mystik Dan won by a nose over Sierra Leone and Japan-bred Forever Young in the closest three-way finish since 1947.

The five-week gap follows a more normal race schedule for many thoroughbreds, and some trainers might opt to head to Saratoga to acclimate horses sooner.

Trainer Chad Brown said Sierra Leone will skip the Preakness and leave Monday to train at Saratoga and run the Belmont. Considering how much it took for Sierra Leone to navigate other horses and chase down Mystik Dan before falling a nose short at the wire, rest sounds necessary.

"He's a real laid-back horse but, when we brought him out, was a little more tired than he normally is after his races," Brown said. "I think giving him the five weeks to the Belmont is definitely the right thing to do."

Louisville-born trainer Brad Cox is watching Catching Freedom (fourth) and Just A Touch (20th) before deciding their next steps. Forever Young and fellow Japan-bred T O Password (fifth) will head home Tuesday.

That could leave the Preakness without some Derby star power at first glance, though it won't lack for plotlines with a number of well-rested horses expected to compete at Pimlico Race Course.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert could have two entrants as he seeks to follow up National Treasure's victory there last spring. He trains Santa Anita Derby runner-up Imagination and Arkansas Derby winner Muth, who missed the Derby after failed legal attempts by owner Amr Zedan to get him in despite Baffert's suspension by Churchill Downs through the end of 2024.

As McPeek and Mystik Dan's owners ponder a decision, he and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. basked in a wash of congratulations for a Derby victory that put them in exclusive company.

Saturday's win helped both claim rare weekend sweeps of the Derby and the Kentucky Oaks for fillies. McPeek is just the third trainer to do that and the first since Ben Jones (who did it twice) in 1952, while Hernandez is the eighth rider to achieve the feat and the first since Hall of Famer and fellow Louisiana native Calvin Borel in 2009.

Mystik Dan stood unfazed as a cluster of onlookers took photos and selfies while workers bathed him outside the barn. He was then draped with the winner's blanket before being led back to his stall with a WWE-style title belt lying on an outer wall. Oaks-winning filly Thorpedo Anna also made a brief appearance and soaked in the attention.

Hernandez is preparing for his own life-changing spotlight after claiming the sport's marquee race. He dined with his family after the Derby but didn't sleep much, a routine that figures to go on for the next few days amid a flood of interview requests. At some point he hopes to get his mind around all that has happened, but he already has a response ready.

"When somebody asks what my profession is, I'm able to tell them I'm a professional jockey," he said. "And then the first question they normally ask is, 'Have you ever won the Kentucky Derby?' I can say that now."

Classic 1939 Packards Are Beautiful Cars But Terrible Swimmers

If you want to show off your prized classic car, a slick photo shoot is a must. Whether you line up on a twisty mountain pass to snap the shots, an abandoned automotive plant that may be from the same era as your car, or a boat ramp offering idyllic view out over a lake, shots like this are sure to make your classic really pop. If you decide the boat ramp is your ideal photo setting, make sure your brakes are in tip top condition before parking up near any large body of water, or disaster could strike.

Sadly, that’s what one California classic car fan found out this week, when they parked up their 1939 Packard sedan for a photo shoot on the side of a lake. While the car was in prime position for its moment in the sun, the came free from its earthly shackles and rolled into the lake below, report Mercury News.

The car, which could be worth as much as $40,000, rolled off a boat ramp in Canyon Lake and into the water below. It ended up in about 20-feet of water and fully submerged, risking its interior, electrics and engine. As Mercury News explains:

The Fire Department received a call from the property owners association just before 8 a.m.

Security workers had noticed an oily sheen on the Riverside County reservoir and reviewed surveillance video for clues. They saw the Packard disappear beneath the surface, Canyon Lake Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse said.

Canyon Lake firefighters noticed bubbles as well as oil and, worried that someone was inside, requested assistance from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department and the Riverside County sheriff’s dive team.

When the car’s owner arrived on the scene to see their car up to its roof in lake water, firefighters told Mercury News that they were “very emotional” at the sight. The owner also explained to officers that the car was empty, so a planned water rescue mission from the fire service was called off.

This meant firefighters just had to focus on retrieving the car from its new watery home, which reportedly took “several hours.” In the process, officers needed to address an oil spill on the lake, so the local water company was notified, reports Canyon Lake Insider.

Booms had to be put up around the spill to contain the oil, which further complicated the removal of the car. However, it was soon hauled out of the water and taken off for inspectors to analyze the damage. There were no reports of injury through the whole ordeal.

Chinese fans hope Zhou can break through in home debut at Shanghai - Autoblog

SHANGHAI — Zhou Guanyu's Chinese fans hope the country's first and only Formula One driver can shrug off a poor run of form and shine on his home debut to answer the critics who view his passport as the predominant reason he has a drive.

Sauber's Zhou, who races in Shanghai this week in China's first grand prix since 2019, has failed to score in the season's first four races but local supporters remain positive.

Having a Chinese driver is a boon for F1 and its owner Liberty Media who see the world's second-largest country as a key market. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has said in the past that China could ultimately host two races.

"That Zhou is a Chinese driver is definitely relevant to his team choosing him," said Li Qixiang, a F1 fan from Shanghai and chemistry teacher with tickets for Sunday's race.

"His personal performance is quite controversial among his fans. His potential is recognized but it's hard to say how he really ranks compared with the other drivers. If his car is good, he may perform better."

Zhou enjoyed a relatively successful junior career, winning races in the feeder Formula 2 series in 2021 and against a competitive field which included current McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished on the podium twice as a rookie last year.

The Chinese driver has qualified last over the past three races.

"Zhou Guanyu's ability to improve his qualifying has reached an imminent juncture. I am really looking forward to seeing Zhou get tough in front of his home fans in Shanghai," wrote one Chinese commentator on social media platform Xiaohongshu.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, with Sauber due to become the factory Audi team in 2026 and uncertainty about the future lineup.

The German manufacturer has ambitious goals and has also been linked to race winners like Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who is looking for a seat for next season when seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton replaces him.

Many of Zhou's supporters lay the blame for his lack of success on Swiss-based Sauber, who have been midfield battlers for decades on a far smaller budget than manufacturer rivals.

"My expectations are a bit low for Shanghai, to be honest. Zhou Guanyu will only get one practice session to get used to the track ... I feel he might not even make it into the second part of qualifying," wrote another Chinese fan on Xiaohongshu.

The Chinese Grand Prix is also the first sprint race of the season, with just one practice session before sprint qualifying on Friday and that 100km race on Saturday before regular qualifying.
